Since April 2006, Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC) has allowed international post-secondary students, to apply for a work permit to work off-campus. This program will give eligible international students the opportunity to gain valuable work experience as well as to participate in activites that will ehance their learning experience. International students bring with them a wealth of knowledge, perspectives, skills and experiences which they can bring to the Canadian work environment.
At NorthStar we help qualified foreign students apply for their off-campus work permits enabling them to work off campus while completing their studies. Please keep in mind, to qualify, you must be a full-time student enrolled at a participating publicly funded post-secondary educational institution or in an approved program at an eligible privately funded institution.
At NorthStar we help provide:
Assess your eligibility for the off-campus work permit program
Review and analyze documents to support your work permit application
Wherever applicable, assist you in achieving eligibility in accordance with the criteria established by CIC
Provide the client with counseling and guidance for seeking employment
Facilitate and assist in the application of your Social Insurance Number (SIN) that is necessary to be able to work in Canada.
A few important points for students to keep in mind:
Students can not begin to work off campus until they have received their work permit.
The work permit authorizes you to work up to 20 hours per week during regular academic sessions, and full time during scheduled breaks (for example, winter and summer holidays, and spring break).
If you are no longer a full-time student, you must return your work permit to a local CIC office.
